I have created subtitles on the first video and found a plug-in for my wordpress application that has both subtitles and a feature to speed up the video.

Production notes: I did the tutorial by recording my screen with Quicktime (which this software is included in the Mac Operating System). You can record with your computer microphone. It creates a .MOV file. I then strip the sound from the video in Media Encoder to an .mp3 sound file. I open that file in Audacity (a free sound editing program). I go through the sound file and delete all my UMs, Clicks and other noises (as best I can), then export an edited file. Then I bring both the video file (.mov) and the audio file (edited.mp3) into Adobe AfterEffects. Sometimes I enhance the video with text prompts in AfterEffects. But, for this tutorial, I didn’t create any additional text prompt. When you use an edited sound file, you need turn off the sound embedded in the .mov file, and place the edited sound file in the timeline to replace it. Then I rendered that as a new .mp4 movie.
However, I wanted to try to find a video plug in that could give you the option to speed up the pace of the video. The video player I originally installed on this site did not have that feature, but often students would ask for it. So, I created a Youtube channel. However, I would like to publish my work on my own website and the Youtube situation has required me to hand over some privacy issues to Microsoft Enterprise which the school uses and I chose not to enable that, so I have abandoned the Youtube channel that I had set up a few years ago. My uploads are still there and I may create a new one under this website name, but for now, I will publish my tutorials on my own platform independently.
I found a video plug in that has the ability to do captions, so I ventured into learning how to do that!
The challenge was to get my voice recording translated into text (a.k.a. voice-to-text). Well since I can’t download software on my school computer without going to IT, in my research I discovered that you can do this with Adobe Premiere which I do have on my work computer. I have never used this program before, but I was able to import my rendered .mp4 file easily into it. This program enables you to translate voice to text. That was pretty easy to do. But then the hours of editing happen as you need to go through the video and check the spelling, punctuation—and then you realize that sometimes your vocal description might not be as specific as you want it to be—but the translation was pretty good. I did have to adjust where the caption would sit on each frame. I also had to find out how to change the font in all of the caption text boxes!
After a couple of hours doing that (instructional videos really do take a long time to acccomplish, as do written tutorials—hours!) The render time of the video was very quick. It was faster than my original render from AfterEffects! And the file size is much smaller, so that was a happy discovery.
What I have discovered though, that since I embedded the captions in the video file, and I don’t have a separate .vtt file to upload to the plug-in interface, the posted videos do not have the option to turn captioning off and on. So, I have uploaded a version WITH the captions and one WITHOUT.
When learning new software and technology, you always run into these snags where you expect something to work one way and discover it doesn’t work the way you expected. It helps to have a “problem-solving” attitude in this field of work if you are going to survive and keep your skills up-to-date!
There is an upgrade version of the free one that I installed, the one-time purchase for all the features is around $150 bucks. So, I will see if I like this and think about that.
