Virtue calls us to a higher level where few peopledesire to go.

“Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people. The general government, can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, an oligarchy, an aristocracy or any despotic or oppressive form so long as there is any virtue in the body of the people.”
— G. Washington

Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
— B. Franklin

“Without virtue, happiness cannot be.”
— T. Jefferson

Here is the challenge.

Virtues today are well, “virtually” lost in our society. So to help combat this crisis and bring attention to it. Your design project will be to design a poster series around “virtues.” You can choose to appeal to encouraging the “good,” or if you prefer to challenge the viewer with why to avoid the “bad” you can approach the design from that perspective. The objective is to get the viewer to think. The target audience for this series is college-age young adults. The objective is to draw the viewer in by the images and text to evoke interest and through the message a response. You can choose to grab the attention of the target audience with a graphic, illustration or photograph. The Virtue/Vice/Sin needs to be the focal point. Each poster in the series should clearly communicate one concept (virtue, vice, sin, etc.)

The poster should inspire the viewer to think about the concept of sin and its consequences and encourage the viewer to choose virtue. Your series should aesthetically work together and identify as a series. So the format and layout, type, color scheme should be the consistent thread through your poster series.

You must have a minimum of 3 posters in your series. Since we are using an outside printer, if you design more than 3 posters, you will have to select the best 3 to print. We will print out smaller proofs before we send them to the printer.

You can choose to use humor, metaphor, contrast or a literal style – but it needs to successfully communicate the concept and provoke thought.

Here is a list of principal virtues and sin:

Humility (modesty) / Pride

Generosity (charity) / Greed

Abstinence / Gluttony

Kindness / Envy

Gratitude / Thanklessness

Patience / Anger

Compassion / Indifference

Chastity / Fornication

Temperance / Indulgence

Diligence (fervor) / Sloth

Other Sins and Virtues include:  Offense, Unforgiveness, Anger, Bitterness, Revenge, Gossip, Slander, Lying, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Trustworthiness, Wisdom, Commitment, Faith, Loyalty, Respect, Sacrifice, Service, Tolerance.

Poster Trim Size: 18” x 24” needs to have .25” bleed on the document file and all color touching the edges must extend to the outer edge of the bleed line.
