This project uses various implements to make marks on paper. The freedom of unstructured play with paint, ink and marker with brushes, q-tips, cotton balls, wire, and other non-traditional implements allows students to explore patterns and positive and negative space.
After the sheets of paper have a variety of marks, a square template is used to look for and frame interesting compositions that have been created in mark making play.
The squares are 4″ x 4″ and are assembled and glued onto a 16″ wide and 20″ high black mat board in a 3 x 4 grid structure. Students learn about weighted framing and signing prints.
Cut out a 4″ x 4″ composition square template

Make a variety of marks on paper with different implements
(i.e. brushes, q-tips, wire, marker etc.)
Mark out an interesting composition and cut it out.
Cut out 12 compositions and arrange on your mat board.
Glue the square onto your black mat board. Mark your squares prior to applying glue
so you know where they go on your board. Apply the glue to both the back of the squares and also on your mat board.
Let the glue totally dry before applying the squares to the mat board.

Mark your board with a light pencil. 1-1/2″ from the top and two sides.
The bottom will be weighted.
Apply your squares onto the black mat board into a grid that is 3 squares wide by 4 squares high.

Sign the bottom right of the artwork and give it a title and
write that under the left-hand sided under the artwork.
Never write directly on your artwork.
